About me, the business book ghostwriter

Honestly, there's not much to tell.

As I said on the home page, I'm originally from the Washington, DC area, and I currently live in South Carolina not far from Myrtle Beach.

As ghostwriters, we generally stay hidden in the background, our names never appearing on the book's cover and rarely in the acknowledgements. And that's just fine with us.

By nature, we shun the spotlight and love to stay out of the way and write.

I have a master's in English, and before I started ghostwriting, I worked as a technical writer and business writer for over twenty years, serving businesses and organizations.

Personally, I love the arts and I love reading and writing. I also love books, and feel it a privilege to work on writing them.

I love to help my clients craft nonfiction books that make a difference, especially in the world of business.

About ghostwriting and business books

A ghostwriter is someone who writes something (usually a book, but not always) for someone else, but their name almost never appears on the book.

So, if you've ever read a nonfiction bestseller written by a celebrity, a politician, or a well-known business leader, then you've probably written a book that was ghostwritten.

Prince Harry's memoir, Spare, which broke all sorts of sales records for a nonfiction book, was written with the aid of author J.R. Moehringer (in other words, Mr. Moehringer ghostwrote Spare). Michelle Obama also got help writing her book, Becoming.

Ghostwriting and ghostwriters have for many, many years. As far back as the writing of the Old Testament, unnamed scribes have penned chapters and books with another's name on it (Don't assume that Solomon actually wrote the book of Solomon).

Today, ghostwriting is for more than rich celebs or politicians. Anyone whoo wants to invest in writing a book that can make a difference might benefit from hiring a ghostwriter's help to write their book.

Is ghostwriting legal or ethical?

Yes.

Of course, if you steal another's story or words or wisdom and pass it off as yours (whether you use a ghostwriter or not), you can get into trouble.

But properly done, ghostwriting is both legal and ethical, especially when your ghostwriter is there to coax your information and story out of you.

How much does it cost to hire a ghostwriter?

Ghostwriters have to pay rent and buy groceries, too. And they can't exist on the mad hope that your book might someday hit the bestseller list and make everyone involved a millionaire.

For that reason, ghostwriters do what is called work for hire, meaning that they are paid for the work they do.

If you want to share some of your bestselling book's royalties with your ghostwriter, that is up to you, but long before your book hits the shelves, you will have paid your ghostwriter for their hard work.

So, how much? Good, US-based ghostwriters cost anywhere from $20,000 on up to $100,000 to write a book, with the total fee depending on the nature of the book, its length, and the experience level of the ghostwriter.

“I hired Jonathan to help me write my book on practical educational methods that teachers and administrators can use to help all of their students learn better. Jonathan encouraged me to go beyond relying on academic journals only for my book and helped me document my many years of bringing at-risk schools up to a higher level of academic achievement. His way with words and his ability to help me deliver my message in the clearest way possible were invaluable in making my book be the best it could be. I highly recommend his services for your book, whatever it may be.”—Roy P. Ph.D.
